The dominican Church in Brussels A vibrant place of prayer and beauty

When the Dominicans were building their new church in 1901, they little suspected that a century later it would stand a stone’s throw from the European institutions at the heart of an international neighbourhood. So as to respond to this new development in the city, an international commu- nity of friars preachers has been resident here since 2001, facing the Parc du Cinquantenaire. Today they lead the prayer of the Church and are the driving force behind a whole variety of different activities - concerts, exhibitions, a library, talks and conferences, not to mention all the personal encounters and meetings with people who call on us for different needs, and who sometimes need a listening ear. The church of the Dominicans is open 365 days a year for those in search of a place of peace and recollection. After a hundred years of good and loyal service to the Christian and cultural life of Brussels, the Dominican church is in need of restoration. The first phase of the work has made it possible for us to renew the lighting, heating and sound system. The time has come to continue the restoration of our inheritance so as to preserve it for future genera- tions. The study prepared by architects of ADV and ID Studio concerns the roof that is in need of repair, the many stained glass windows, the ceilings, the tower, the sealing of the external walls and the organ.

This campaign of work coincides with some unobtrusive but necessary rearrangements to improve the quality of the welcome we would like to offer. The temporary partition separating the winter chapel from the sanctuary will be replaced by a glass screen, and the sacristy will be divided so as to welcome people who would like to meet a Dominican. To achieve the project an overall budget of 3 million euros is needed. The Region of Brussels-Capital, which classified the whole complex as a historical monument in 2006, will contribute to the cost. But there remains two million euros to be found by the Dominicans. As this is not a parish church, it depends entirely on the faithful to finance its functioning. Thanks to the gifts already received, a first stage of work costing 250,000 euros can be launched now. The speed with which the work can be carried out will depend on your generosity. The Fondation Roi Baudouin (King Baudoin Fund) is coming to the aid of the restoration of this unique neo-gothic complex of buildings. For every gift of 30 or more euros paid into the account of the Fondation Roi Baudouin: 000-0000004-04 (rue de Brederode 21, 1000 Brussels), marked “Dominicains de Bruxelles”, you may obtain a tax exemption and your gift will in fact cost you only half of the sum you name. To make the church of the Dominicans even more welcoming, we count on you. Thank you in advance for coming to our support.
